Carbon's electron structure

Carbon's electron structure
Publication Date: June, 2005
Type of Resource: Video/animation

This online resource is a video clip on the unique properties of carbon that are due to its electron structure.

Because it focuses on the electronic structure of carbon it links well to the Year 10 content descriptor related to the periodic table. The video clip includes references to bonding and completing a valence shell of 8 electrons. It also provides a good introduction to covalent bonds and organic compounds. There is also a short section on the historical production of glucose that has some aspects of Science as a Human Endeavour. The last section is quite high level, but has a high interest value, without expecting too much of the students.

The web page includes a tab for teachers with suggestions for prior work and follow up questions.

Additional Information

This short video clip is from the ABC’s Atoms of Fire documentary and is available on the ABC Splash website.
