The story of a river

The story of a river
Type of Resource: Practical activity/investigation

This downloadable resource shows mankind's effect on a river.

The resource is a MS Word document that has been adapted from a more complex story to be relatable to younger students. It is the story of a clean river as it flows downstream past farmland, hobby farmers, industry, and demonstrates how these activities contribute to pollution and waste.

Some preparation is required. Small containers filled with vinegar, dirt, mud and small bits of plastic are needed (the details are included). Each container should be given labels that correspond to the key bold words in the story, and as the key word is read out in the story, the small container of material should be tipped into a large bowl of clean water.

By the end of the story the students can see how small bits of rubbish accumulate. This can be combined with a PowerPoint of the key words for foundation students, enabling them to recognise the words and therefore to participate in the activity.
