Natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties that can influence their use

Code:

Egg Bungee Jump - Year 4 CLE

This CLE involves a hands-on activity linked to investigating the properties of matter.

Description: In this investigation, the properties of materials are investigated in the context of modelling a bungee jump by an egg. There is an emphasis on linking the physical properties of materials to their use in order to solve a real-world problem.

Learning intentions

Students will be able to:

Lighting the slums of the Philippines

This YouTube video shows a household demonstration of the refraction of light.

The resource is a 6.25-minute video showing how the ability to refract light can be used to develop a simple cheap technology to solve problems.

In the slums of a neighbourhood in the Philippines, the houses are so close together that they get very little natural light. A Filipino man uses a recycled PET bottle filled with water and a little bleach to solve the problem.

Controlling sound

This activity shows how materials can affect our hearing.

The resource describes an hands-on activity where students can design and create noise-cancelling headphones from a variety of materials.

The resource provides teacher background notes, worksheets and step-by-step instructions.

Compare Fabric Materials

This hands-on activity investigates the different characteristics of materials.

The resource gives instructions for a hands-on activity where students can examine different types of fabrics and learn about their different characteristics.

Using magnifying glasses and sandpaper, students can test and observe the weave and wear quality of fabric samples. By comparing the qualities of different fabrics, they can come to understand why so many different types of fabric exist and are able to recognize and suggest different uses for them.

Waste Matters - Global Education

In this series of activities students investigate waste creation and management.

The students investigate this issue through their own experiences and case studies.

They develop key understandings about the pressures on the environment, ecosystems and people’s health that are caused by waste, and explore ways of improving waste management to help build a sustainable future.
