Some of Earth’s resources are renewable, including water that cycles through the environment, but others are non-renewable

Code:

A Never-Ending Supply

This online resource is an introduction to renewable energy sources.

The resource is a short video (2 min 44 sec) that provides information on a range of renewable energy sources. It begins with a brief explanation of non-renewable resources then introduces the concept of renewable energy sources and describes the features of a number of renewable energy sources.

This resource also provides support materials and tips for teachers.

Rock Cycle Interactive

This interactive simulation looks at the Earth's rock cycle.

The resource looks at evolution of rock types with an emphasis on students learning to identifying the different types of rock that occur as part of the cycle.

This interactive provides valuable visualisations that allow students to explore highly abstract concepts and apply their understanding to natural features of the landscape.

Australia's Mineral Resources

This online resource explores Australia's mineral wealth.

The resource is an interactive that allows students to trace the origins and distribution of the country's extensive mineral resources.

The interactive examines the exploration process and explores different mining methods and the processing of ores.

Environmental issues relating to the management and rehabilitation of mine sites and the range of uses for minerals in everyday life are also investigated.

Earth and space - Science by Doing

This online resource covers Year 7 Earth and space science.

The resource is an inquiry-based learning sequence that includes: hands-on activities, digital interactives, animations and videos.

The resource covers renewable and non-renewable resources, recycling, sustainability and ecological footprint, astronomy, gravity, orbits, weight and mass, telescopes and rockets.

Students also learn how to develop justifiable claims based on evidence and assess the likely impacts of new technologies.

Connect the Spheres: Earth Systems Interactions

This online resource investigates the Earth's spheres, with emphasis on water.

The site gives students an understanding of the Earth’s four environmental spheres (ie., the biosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and atmosphere) and how they are connected.

This activity is the introductory experience to a series of lessons about water resources on Earth. Students can investigate the previously mentioned Earth systems by making observations in nature and identifying the systems in the natural world.

Oil and water - Year 7 W.A.S.P.

This online resource looks at renewable and non-renewable resources.

The resource is a teaching package that provides hands-on activities, with teacher support materials, to support the Year 7 Earth and space science and chemical sciences components of the Australian Curriculum.

The activities are organised into three topics:

  1. Renewable and non-renewable resources,
  2. Water as A renewable resource, and
  3. Oil and gas as non-renewable resources

Interactive Water Cycle Diagram

This interactive diagram looks at the Earth's water cycle.

The resource includes an interactive diagram that shows how the Earth's water is not only always changing forms between liquid, solid and gas, but also moving on, above and within the Earth.

The interactive diagram contains interactive features that when hovered over, display information and links regarding each stage of the cycle.

Energy Evolution – National Science Week Resource Book 2012

This downloadable resource book looks at forms of renewable energy.

It examines renewable energy sources including wind, solar, geothermal and ocean, as well as new and emerging technologies such as biomass, thermo-electrics and noise harvesting.

The book provides activities for students in Year levels F–10 with many activities able to be modified to suit individual student needs.
