Investigating patterns of inheritance - Year 10 CLE

This CLE covers the topic of genetic inheritance.

The resource is a Connected Learning Experience developed by Science ASSIST to help Year 10 teachers teach the concept of genetic inheritance to their students.

It also includes examples of how the investigations and activities can be adjusted to cater for gifted and talented students.

Description: In this investigation, the inheritance of single gene traits will be investigated using animal and plant examples.

Learning intentions

Reaction rates - Year 10 CLE

This Connected Learning Experience looks at chemical reaction rates.

The resource is a Science ASSIST Connected Learning Experience to assist Year 10 teachers teach the concept of reaction rates to their students.

Description: In this investigation, factors which affect reaction rates are investigated by conducting experiments. Students can then use their knowledge and understanding of reaction rates to take on the role of a process chemist charged with controlling the time taken for a specific reaction to take place.

Expansion of the Universe - Year 10 CLE

This online resource looks at cosmology.

The resource is a Connected Learning Experience (CLE) to help teachers teach the concepts concerned with the Big Bang theory to Year 10 students.

Description:

In this investigation, Edwin Hubble’s observations will be examined as evidence for the Big Bang theory. In 1929, Hubble discovered that the light from distant galaxies was red shifted and that the further a galaxy is from Earth, the faster it is moving away. This was evidence for the expansion of the universe following the Big Bang.

The Egg Bungee Jump - Year 10 CLE

This online resource helps teach the concepts of motion and energy transformations.

The resource is a Science ASSIST Connected Learning Experience (CLE) designed specifically to teach the concepts of motion and energy transformations to Year 10 students.

Description:

In this investigation, motion and energy transformations are investigated in the context of modelling a bungee jump by an egg. There is an emphasis on finding and analysing patterns in data in order to solve a real-world problem.

Learning intentions

The Penguin Project - Year 3 CLE

This online resource helps teach the transference of heat to Year 3s.

Developed by Science ASSIST, this Connected Learning Experience (CLE) focuses on heat transfer and heat insulators designed for younger students.

It also includes examples of how the investigations and activities can be adjusted to cater for students with diverse needs so they can access and participate as well.

Description

Big Bag Ban

This online resource examines issues concerning biodegradable plastic bags.

The resource details a student activity where students examine biodegradable plastic bags as a possible alternative to ordinary plastic bags.

The EU has approved tough new measures to slash the use of plastic bags. New targets were implemented to force each country to reduce plastic bag use by 80% before 2019.

Learn Chemistry - Problem Based Practical Activities

This online resource details 10 chemistry practical-related activities for later-year students.

Aimed at students aged 16–18 yrs, the activities are designed to develop their practical and independent study skills.

The activities are problem-based where the students must work in groups to apply their understanding of a concept as well as devise a solution to a practical problem set in a real-life context.

How Do Things Fall?

This online resource looks at the speed at which objects fall.

By close observation of falling objects, students will see that it is the amount of air resistance, not the weight of an object, that determines how quickly an object falls.

A downloadable worksheet is available for students to record their results and answer questions.

Plenty of background information is provided for teachers to make this a very thorough lesson.

Answers to questions posed to students are given throughout the lesson plan in brackets.

The Great Gravity Escape

This online resource investigates the concept of escape velocity.

The resource provides a lesson plan for investigating the effect of gravity between two objects as well as exploring the concept of escape velocity.

Students will be able to see that when the velocity of a spacecraft becomes too great for gravity to hold it in orbit, it will escape orbit and travel away from the planet.

The site includes worksheets that allow students to record their results and answer questions.
