Mapping change over time

This online resource looks at the geologic timeline.

The resource details an activity where a class builds a geologic timeline on a wall, adding one or two pieces of information each week.

Organisms are placed on the timeline, with a description of the evidence for its form and its position on the timeline.

It is suggested that this activity could be done at the start or end of a lesson each week during the topic.

Investigating Eggs in Stories and Science

This unit of work explores the life cycles of egg-laying animals.

It is constructed of 12 learning sequences which vary in duration. They include hatching chickens, the life cycle of a chicken, writing an information report, and a literature study.

Each sequence offers practical advice, probing questions and other teaching and learning experiences.

There are two assessment tasks. The first involves an information report on an egg-laying animal and the second, a character profile.

It would support a teacher planning for either English or Science.

Smooth Moves - Primary Connections

This unit of work introduces the concepts of forces.

Students investigate those forces that act at a distance and those that act due to direct contact.

Forces explored include pushes, pulls, friction, gravity and magnetism.

Students also use a fair test investigation to show how different-sized forces affect the movement of objects.

Beneath Our Feet - Primary Connections

This unit of work investigates soils, rocks and the landscape.

The resource provides opportunities for students to explore how natural processes and human activity shape their surroundings.

Students’ understanding of soils, rocks and landscapes and how they change over time is developed through hands-on activities and student-planned investigations.

Students also investigate factors that affect the erosion of soils.

Earth’s Place in Space - Primary Connections

This unit of work covers Earth's place in the Solar System.

In the resource, students learn about how historical astronomers made their discoveries, including finding out that the Earth is a sphere and its relationship to the Moon and Sun.

Students also explore how the patterns in the sky relate to days, months and years and develop an understanding of how observation and models can be used to shape ideas and understandings through hands-on activities and student-planned investigations.

Night and Day

This unit of work teaches students how night and day occur.

It has a heavy literacy focus, but sequences 1–6 deals with how night and day occurs.

The unit also provides a literature study of Dreaming stories and folktales from a variety of cultures, related to the theme of night and day.

Each sequence is designed to take one or two 45-minute lessons to complete, with additional time suggested needed for students to carry out their own research.

Waste Matters - Global Education

In this series of activities students investigate waste creation and management.

The students investigate this issue through their own experiences and case studies.

They develop key understandings about the pressures on the environment, ecosystems and people’s health that are caused by waste, and explore ways of improving waste management to help build a sustainable future.

Light shows - Primary Connections

This online resource helps teach younger students about light.

The resource is a unit of work where students learn how the reflection, absorption and refraction of light enables them to see.

It includes eight structured lessons, guiding students through an integrated sequence based on the 5Es learning model.

It also includes comprehensive lesson plans, activities, student handouts and additional teaching support material.
